Snowflakes in the air, Christmas songs blasting on the radio and the coldest weekend that I can remember for a long time, it’s that time of year again. The streets look magical as the beautiful Christmas lights take centre stage once more and we crave for that nostalgic feeling again, one we didn’t get to fully enjoy a year ago. This year promised so much more, a hope of actually seeing loved ones and shaking off the pandemic fears. But it still feels subdued: hybrid working, Black Friday moving more online, tube strikes making travelling even less enticing and now the latest covid Christmas special. But don’t worry, apparently Peppa Pig world is the safest place to be if you’re looking for a winter escape.

Whilst it can be bittersweet, it is time to remind ourselves of everything we love about this time of year: those delicious mulled drinks in markets, minty hot chocolates, festive exhibitions, pretty shop windows and most importantly, winding down from work and spending quality time with family and friends. Christmas is coming and its definitely time to find that positive festive cheer to get through the coming months.

The last day of summer didn’t disappoint, one final day of beautiful sunshine to soak up in before we officially welcome all things Autumn: Pumpkin scented candles, cosying up in our warmer clothes, those crisp, sunny walks where the leaves are transforming into fiery oranges and deep reds.. Halloween is creeping upon us but after a particularly grey summer, a bit of festivities and indulgence with family and friends is just what we need!

Spring 2021

It’s spring and with the warmer weather comes hope… more people vaccinated, easing of restrictions and the prospect of being social again! The first time I met a non-relative, a few of weeks ago, I was actually nervous! Could I string words together? Could I survive a whole afternoon out of the house? Of course, it was fine in real life but the lengthy lockdown can make us feel more introverted (at least, more than the usual). Then there is the issue of having not been up to much so what is there to talk about?!

But not all of life has been on standstill whilst we think time has stopped.. In the last twelve months, I’ve gotten to know a new baby niece, missed a spontaneous wedding and lost elderly members of my extended family. However, if there’s one thing the pandemic has taught us, it’s appreciating what we have and the people around us.

As London opens up again, I’m realising just how organised people have become! Places are already booked out for weeks and even secret (not so secret) exhibitions are sold out for pretty much the whole year. A cottage holiday in July? Think again. I haven’t been in a mad rush to be out and about as soon as we could. But I have missed seeing my friends and am looking foward to doing more again, dressing up, checking out new places, doing cultural stuff..

I think once the novelty wears off a little and restrictions ease, it won’t be so tricky getting a booking nor will we always want to. We are craving the social part of our lives currently, but more importantly, we are craving balance. And for artists, the freedom also brings more opportunities of inspiration and creativity. I instantly have so many more ideas when I’m out and about, wandering, talking to different people, seeing new things, ideas to then bring back home and experiment with through illustration and new greeting cards. So as much as anything else, I guess, that is what the easing means to me

Hatched Art® is a new brand launched by artist Rajul in 2017 for her hand drawn artworks in her signature fragmented style which are digitally coloured and created into Greeting Cards and Art Prints.

HATCHED ART® BY RAJUL

‘Hatched Art®’ was conjured from wanting ‘creating’ at the heart of the brand and it describes the fragmented style of my artwork perfectly, like a broken egg! I hand draw in black ink with jagged lines and digitally colour to bring vibrancy and bright colours to the drawings and occasionally animate to bring the artworks to life!

I like to have fun with the brand, pop art being a massive influence and I am inspired by pretty much everything about life around me.

GREETING CARDS

Designed to look like a hatching artwork, each card is uniquely created centring the fragmented illustration with the occasional exploding theme such as ice cream sprinkles, pop corn pieces and even more subtle ideas such as flying birds to have a little fun with the card sending!

ART PRINTS

The ‘animal’ illustrations series were motivated by safaris in Kenya (where my parents were born) and the pineapple purely from a mad desire to draw one! The print is in high quality coloured inks onto uncoated paper to give a ‘vibrant matt’ finish to perfectly decorate a home!
